The Beverly Hills Hotel

A Dorchester Collection Hotel

What it is

An iconic hotel where Hollywood's Golden Age lives on.

What it isn't

Sexy or sleek. A stay here is more of a nostalgia trip than a gloss on L.A.'s contemporary scene.

What we think

The Pink Palace is the epitome of Tinseltown glamour, the Hollywood of Bogart and Bacall, Liz and Dick, the Rat Pack and Marilyn Monroe. Now owned by the Dorchester Collection (which also runs the Bel-Air), the 1912 hotel has undergone some tidy renovations that have repaired the ill-advised remodels of past years. But the nips and tucks have been discreet and respectful, so you'll still find a red-carpet entrance, velvet settees and miles of banana-leaf wallpaper. The housekeepers wear French maid uniforms, and you can get a root beer float at the soda fountain downstairs or rent one of the pink cabanas lining the famous pool. With the exception of the euphemistically named "historic" rooms, the 210 guest quarters are spacious and fresh, retaining a 1940s feel with pink marble bathrooms, slipper chairs and plenty of pink, green and gold accents. Some have balconies or terraces; others have fireplaces. Better yet are the specialty suites and the 23 (fabulous) bungalows tucked among the bougainvilleas and banana palms. There's a luxurious spa and plenty of activities that will charm the kids, especially the "pop-up" refreshments (like mini ice cream cones) at the pool.

You're here because

You love a hotel with personality and history, and you want Hollywood glamour, both old-school ("Is that the bungalow where Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy had their affair?") and new ("Hey, that's Kim Kardashian!"),

The Moment

The car slows to a stop and a bellhop bedecked in a gray uniform with a vintage cap and oh-so-many buttons opens the door, smiling wide. Your feet swing onto the red carpet, and as you look up to the green-and-white striped ceiling of the porte-cochère, you're nearly overcome by a feeling of nostalgia.
