Montage Laguna Beach
Bluff-top hideaway in the OC
What it is
A 250-room craftsman-style resort on 30 Pacific-front acres in Laguna Beach, California.
What it isn't
Directly on the beach. Rather, guests take the stairs or a ramp down a cliff to the shoreline.
What we think
In the early 1900s, Laguna Beach—now largely a ritzy beach destination for moneyed travelers—was a bohemian artists’ colony, a history the Montage honors with its craftsman-style architecture, popular at the time. And while the resort is undeniably sophisticated thanks to sumptuous rooms and destination restaurants, it also encourages travelers to relax, unwind and connect with the wild Pacific landscape. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame panoramic ocean views from all public areas and guestrooms, and resort paths meander through lush gardens and along a 50-foot ocean bluff. Commissioned works by California artists—a porcelain-tiled wall depicting sea life by Los Angeles-based Dora De Lario; Terry Thornsley’s ornate bronze ten-foot tree—also decorate public spaces. The resort’s indoor/outdoor spa has lounges with fireplaces, a eucalyptus steam rooms and dry redwood saunas. While you’re there, drop the half pints off at the Paintbox, a kid’s club with arts and crafts and games. All 250 rooms, painted in soothing whites and creamy yellows, have ocean views, as well as marble bathrooms with candlelit soaking tubs and many have sitting areas.
