ALiLA Marea Beach Resort, Encinitas

Rising Sea Star

What it is

A newly opened sea bluff-side resort with 130 beachy rooms, an all-natural spa and cabana-lined pool with a fire pit.

What it isn't

Hangry. Three locavore restaurants draw from local land and waters; be sure to stop by The Pocket—adjacent to the pool and sandy beach—for craft cocktails.

What we think

The laid-back, sunny personality that epitomizes SoCal is everywhere in this Pacific Ocean-fronting resort. Designers culled from regionally sourced eco finishes— primarily stone and wood—and the result is a brand new retreat that feels right at home. Guest rooms are nothing short of ginormous, starting at 457 square feet, with floor to ceiling glass windows, nautical striped accents, and earthy texture (woven rattans; burnished cement). Perhaps our favorite: the Fire Pit Rooms, where private patios have oversized sectional sofas flanking a gas fire pit, and overlooking either the pool or the waves rolling in on the ocean. The result? You’ll keep on lounging even after twilight falls.

You're here because

You’re on a fitness kick, and the resort has its own gym plus guided hikes and seafront yoga classes for guests.

The Moment

After a day wandering the umpteen museums at San Diego’s Balboa Park, there’s only one thing on your to-do list: soaking in the resort’s infinity-edged whirlpool before taking a nap in your own private cabana. Vacay at its best.
