Encinitas, California
Twelve Senses Retreat
Small Wonder
What it is
A four room B&B designed to heal and delight your senses, with spa treatments, guided meditations and a rooftop bar.
What it isn't
An oversized resort. But with service this good, who needs to stay in a 5,000-room monolith hotel with all the trimmings?
What we think
Your shoulders are bound to drop a bit when you enter Twelve Senses Retreat—every inch of which feels like a contemplative spa, and was created with all-natural materials, from recycled leather wallpaper to volcanic stone floors. That calming vibe is paramount in the rooms, where each one is tailored to a theme: fire, water, air, and earth. Fire has a 48” fireplace—no surprise—but is also fitted with basalt floors, a private patio and charming accessories, such as a handmade mohair blanket from Weckelweiler Werkstätten and Bang & Olufsen bluetooth speakers. For a more effervescent feel, book Air, which has 10’ ceilings, a hammock roomy enough for two that was made by Object in Tijuana, Mexico, a rain shower, and a painting made with energy purifying crystals because...of course it is.
You're here because
Their included breakfasts are locally sourced and truly healthy (as an example, look no further than the avocado toast on organic just-baked bread adorned with micro kale leaves).
The Moment
Under the twinkling lights of the rooftop bar, the misty ocean in the distance, you’ve never felt more “California”...until your waiter hands you a frothy cocktail. You pull your sunglasses down over your eyes. “Hey, Hollywood.”
Location
Tucked away in a neighborhood of Encinitas, California bungalows, within walking distance of Plant Power Fast Food—the area’s most beloved source of vegan bacon cheeseburgers.
