1 Hotel San Francisco

Earthy Elegance

What it is

A new locally inspired retreat with an eco-focus, including an ardently locavore restaurant, holistic spa, and comped yoga classes.

What it isn't

Just for humans. Pets are welcome here, and the concierge even knows all the tail-waggingly good nearby parks.

What we think

Bay Area earth goddesses and Silicon Valley tycoons alike will find a lot to love about this newly opened hotel on the Embarcadero, where luxury and granola meet in equal measure. Guest rooms (which start at 303 square feet) look like they could have been torn from the pages of Architectural Digest, yet have a decidedly low carbon footprint, thanks to sustainably sourced cotton bedding; reclaimed wood and leather furniture; filtered water in the taps—no plastic bottles necessary; and bath products by Bamford, the British spa gurus that embrace organic ingredients at every opportunity. Guests are encouraged to “waste-not, want-not,” with 5-minute shower timers included in each room and Nespresso machines that can provide your morning jolt, no paper cups required. Ask for a Waterfront King and you may find yourself treated to a view of the Bay Bridge…and singing Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” under your breath.

You're here because

Guests can borrow the hotel’s electric Audi e-tron for a test drive. Vroom, vroom.

The Moment

Napa has nothing on the hotel’s Terrene restaurant, where plants appear to grow straight from the ceiling and ingredients are as local as they come (down to the honey from the rooftop beehives). After your woodfired flatbread with marinated artichoke hearts, the grilled skirt steak with apricot relish and grilled broccolini is calling your name—and so delicious, you’ll be back again tomorrow.
