Claremont Club & Spa
What it is
A 1915 Mediterranean-style grande dame overlooking the shimmering San Francisco Bay.
What it isn't
Granola. This may be the least hippy-dippy hideaway in Berkeley, and it was recently face-lifted by Fairmont.
What we think
Built on the site of a former Gold Rush castle, the Claremont still exudes gilt luxury today, from the 276 just revamped Hollywood Regency–style guest rooms (tufted headboards; Venice-inspired mirrors) to the spa, where you’ll find caviar facials, a eucalyptus steam room and a saline pool. Activities on the 22 acres of manicured, not-a-leaf-out-of-place grounds include fountain-fed outdoor heated pools and a tennis program that would likely impress Andy Roddick, with 10 lit courts and a master professional director running the USPTA award-winning facility. Sunday brunches in the Bay-view Meritage restaurant are nearly a religious experience. For proof, look no further than the caramelized banana bread with orange vanilla bean butter and brioche French toast dolloped with whipped crème fraîche.
You're here because
You want five-star city luxury within a Birkenstock’s throw of the original Peet’s Coffee and Chez Panisse.
As the sun slips down over the Bay, you head to the bar. The pink imperial raspberry sidecar, topped with Moët & Chandon, seems tailor-made for toasting the day.

The hotel abuts Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve (and its ridge-top view to the Golden Gate Bridge) and is just a 30-minute walk to UC Berkeley. But the real beauty is being ensconced in a leafy retreat that’s just 14 miles from San Francisco's Financial District and Embarcadero.
