Los Olivos, California
The Inn At Mattei's Tavern
An Auberge Resort
What it is
A storied 19th century stagecoach stop transformed into an artful garden-fringed resort with a serene outdoor pool, spa flanked by olive groves, and five buzzing restaurants and bars that champion California’s best.
What it isn't
Blah. Experiences on offer here are both unexpected and unforgettable, ranging from “Girls Gone Wine” tours with local female vintners to tintype portrait sessions taken by their artist in residence.
What we think
When the original tavern broke ground here circa 1886, visitors to Los Olivos likely had one goal: gold. Now, guest experiences are spurred by another sort of gold rush—this time, to live large in California’s patented low-key-yet-luxe style. Cottages here are either decades-old or meant to look original, yet reborn for today’s traveler with airy whitewashed interiors, sumptuous leather furniture and thickly woven rugs topping the cinnamon hued wood floors. Bonus: each has a fire pit, and/or an indoor gas fireplace for cozy nights in; we particularly love the 996 square foot Cypress Cottage for its clapboard walls. Guest rooms are a notch more intimate at 450 square feet, but just as aesthetically delightful—with private sun porches and claw foot soaking tubs in the spa-like baths lined with glimmering tiles.
You're here because
The only thing better than stopping to smell the rosé is adding on a spa day. The inn is opening a Lavender Barn soon complete with outdoor horse trough tubs for baths, but the existing spa is also topnotch—with treatments like warm salt scrubs.
The Moment
After a night of roving from winery to winery, you’re famished—and the breakfast at The Tavern, helmed by Executive Chef Rhoda Magbitang, is exactly what the doctor ordered. This morning: lemon ricotta griddle cakes with whipped lemon butter…swoon!
