A head-to-toe makeover a few years ago relaxed some of the St. Regis's more traditional design elements, but it continues to define classic luxury in Aspen. Skiers, honeymooners and families alike favor the resort for its contemporary comforts and access to the winter wonderland outside. Muted tones of lavender and silver dominate the color palette, and the 179 rooms and suites avoid the default detailing of many alpine resorts, opting instead for polished wooden floors, regal leather sleigh beds and smart wall panelings. At Shadow Mountain Lodge, guests can sip fireside cups of Earl Grey and nibble from towering platters of savories and sweets, or watch the spectacle of a Champagne bottle sabering. Regulars (and foodies) appreciate the hotel’s Chefs Club series, run by Food & Wine, which features a rotating roster of past winners of the magazine's Best New Chef award. One of the few full-fledged spas in the area, Remède offers options for soothing weary quads and glutes. The ski butler (who is separate from the phalanx of guest-room butlers) coordinates everything from lift tickets and lessons in the winter, to biking, fly-fishing, rafting and clay-shooting in the summer.
