Sonnenalp Hotel

Old-world European charm transported to Vail

What it is

A Bavarian-influenced hotel that marries traditional European design and service with front-row access to the slopes and style of Vail Village.

What it isn't

While it's walking distance to the chair lifts, this is not a ski in, ski out property.

What we think

Sonnenalp is German for “Sun on the Mountains,” a name that this Vail-based property shares with the original resort, built in Bavaria in 1919. While the sister property in Colorado isn’t quite as old, it’s still been a community staple for 30 years and a second home—one known for its warm staff and relaxed charm—for generations of skiers. Of the 127 rooms almost all are suites, not to mention cozy respites from the snow. Bathrooms have heated marble floors and soaking tubs; Alpine-style furnishings are all custom made and rooms have Bavarian-style gas-long fireplaces. It’s the pillowy beds, though, that repeat guests rave most about, as well as the homemade cookies at turndown. The kid’s club impresses with guided nature walks and trips to an indoor rock climbing wall; for adult activities, consult the veteran bellman, who are some of the town’s top insiders for hard-to-book restaurants, lesser-known slopes and quiet hiking trails.

You're here because

You want to stay in a storied Vail property that makes you feel like an insider in this notoriously exclusive ski destination.

The Moment

When owner Johannes Faessler greets you over coffee, fresh fruit and Muesli, served on custom hand-painted china, in the restaurant’s glass-enclosed terrace overlooking Vail’s Gore Creek.
