Park Hyatt Washington

Contemporary polish in the West End

What it is

A high-end but unfussy hotel close to the buzz—without being in the middle of it.

What it isn't

A buttoned-up business center posing as lodging.

What we think

The Park Hyatt is a welcome oasis in a town known for being reserved and a bit stuffy. Located in the West End, close to Dupont Circle, it has a pleasingly zen design (by Tony Chi Associates) that stylishly incorporates elements of Americana. The wall behind the front desk is upholstered in burlap; works by American artists—some on loan from the Phillips Collection—line the corridors. As you'd expect from Park Hyatt, service is exemplary: instead of rattling off directions, a staffer might walk you to the elevator with a genuine smile. The 216 handsome rooms have attractive Shaker tables, wood blinds, hardcover books—plus the occasional Arco floor lamp for a touch of modernity. Blue Duck Tavern, a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement and still one one of the city's best restaurants, is right downstairs (the Obamas are fans). The hotel's ace in the hotel might be its fitness center, complete with a saltwater pool set under a skylit ceiling.

You're here because

You're no traditionalist (even in this conservative-skewing capital), but you still consider comfort, luxury and attentive service as core values. Location-wise, you want easy enough access to Washington's attractions but prefer not to be right in the thick of things.

The Moment

Coasting down the National Mall on one of the hotel’s hybrid bikes, the Washington Monument at your back, the Capitol's dome ahead, cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Restaurants & Bars

Blue Duck Tavern - Acclaimed by Zagat Survey as one of “America’s Best Restaurants” 2013, Washingtonian as one of the “100 Best Restaurants” 2013, Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year – Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington 2013 and awarded “3 Stars” by The Washington Post 2012, Blue Duck Tavern brings exceptional regional American cuisine to discerning travelers and Washingtonians

Location

Across Rock Creek from Georgetown, the Park Hyatt is in a convenient but quiet part of the capital. Most monuments and museums are about 15-20 minutes away by cab (or one of the hotel's hybrid bikes). It’s a 15-minute drive to Reagan National and about 45 to Dulles.
