An ode to ye olde DC. In fact, it’s as hip as hotels come, with Full Service Radio broadcasting from the lobby and local star chefs turning out unexpected world cuisines in the three on-site restaurants.

What we think

The Founding Fathers might be shocked by what they’d encounter at The Line, but our guess is they’d be equally delighted. This is far from Washington as usual. Rooms are indie and artful, with stashes of vintage books, antique nightstands, zippy free WiFi, and handmade bath products; ask for a Monument room for oversized windows that peep out on—you guessed it—The Washington Monument. They’re painfully hip, but we’d wager you won’t spend much time in them, not when one of Esquire’s top 21 bars in America—Brothers and Sisters—is just downstairs.There is one thing that would make perfect sense to Thomas Jefferson and his coterie: James Beard Award winning chef Spike Gjerde has whipped up a locavore restaurant, A Rake’s Progress, where every single thing on the menu comes directly from the surrounding region (get the Maryland crab pancake and ember-grilled pork loin).

The Moment

You thought they took a risk opening Spoken English restaurant—a Japanese boite where all guests stand at communal tables meant to facilitate lively conversation with strangers (called Tachinomiya in Japan). But when you belly up to yours and start kicking back chicken skin dumplings and chilled asparagus with burnt strawberry, you raise your “I am Very Hot & Sexy” cocktail to cheers your neighbor.
