Miami Beach, Florida
1 Hotel South Beach
Eco-friendly sophistication
What it is
A chic and mindful newcomer on South Beach.
What it isn't
One of Miami’s party places with a pool that's equal parts chlorine and cocktails.
What we think
1 Hotel and Residence reflects a new ethos for Miami: In place of the all-night ragers that define South Beach, 1 Hotel reflects the growing local trend that appreciates the area's more natural assets—celebrate "daylife," as the property itself puts it (as well as nightlife). Occupying a full block of beachfront property (the building opened in 1925 as the Roney Plaza and was more recently the Gansevoort), the hotel is casually tranquil and gracefully eco-friendly—think reclaimed wood, living walls and linen furniture rather than hemp bracelets or recycled wastewater. The rooms and suites are subtle, handsome and decidedly large for South Beach; floor-to-ceiling windows make them feel ever bigger. The hotel's Bamford Haybarn Spa marks the US debut for the holistic-leaning spa brand. The 12-room spa is complimented by the first-ever Spartan Gym as well as a SoulCycle studio. 1 Hotel can also organize paddleboard, yoga, or kayak trips in the Everglades. You'll rub elbows with locals dining at the brand new Plnthouse, Mathew Kenney's fresh, plant-based take on the traditional café-style menu, or at Tom Colicchio’s much-loved farm-to-table Beachcraft. For the meat-seeking STK serves locally-sourced surf and turf. Want a place to mingle and sip on a cocktail? Grab a comfy chair in the beautiful, open lobby and enjoy an offering from the witty lobby bar, Tom on Collins, or take in the view at Watr at The 1 Rooftop. (If you're dashing out, grab a cold-pressed juice or a to-go healthy snack at Nativ Made—get the "I and Only" juice for a quick, clean blast of energy.)
You're here because
You want something more mature than the neon party scene, and with a holistic lean. Also, seriously delicious dining and a superlative slice of beach.
The Moment
Up on the 18th-floor roof deck, you lean back on the linen lounge chair and take a sip of your mojito (noting the mint grown in the hotel’s herb garden just below) as you witness yet another epic Miami sunset.
