SLS South Beach, Miami

The center of the scene

What it is

A sexy, chic beachfront boutique for those who intend to be seen.

What it isn't

Family-friendly. The mirrors on the ceiling aren’t for making funny faces.

What we think

The SLS arrived in 2012 and has been a hot haute spot ever since. The beachfront Art Deco tower signaled Philippe Starck's return to Miami, and the designer certainly delivered (with an assist from Lenny Kravitz in the penthouses). You enter via red carpet to discover that in place of a lobby, there’s the perpetually buzzing José Andrés restaurant, Bazaar, with a jigsaw puzzle of tables, an open kitchen displaying a huge leg of Iberian ham, a massive shell-encrusted chandelier and eclectic, Spanish-Japanese-South American tapas. Upstairs, the rooms are undeniably sexy—the mirrors on the ceiling aren’t just for making funny faces—they channel Madame de Pompadour with pink-and-white tones and walls traced in Rococo filigree. (Note: the entry-level rooms are fairly cozy, so look to the suites, villas or the penthouses if you need to sprawl out.) The pool area, with its swank cabanas, giant silver duck statue and constant flow of hot-to-trot, fit-and-tan Miami locals, visitors and SLS guests is a weekend scene—especially after the sun goes down and Hyde Beach Club turns the volume up. Get a room on a higher floor if you intend to fall asleep before 3 am.

You're here because

What's the point of being in South Beach if you're not in the heart of the scene?

The Moment

Gleaming Ferraris and Maybachs line the red carpet entrance. The grand doors of the hotel open and you join the flow of shimmering nightlife gods and goddesses as they make their way through Bazaar by Jose Andres towards Hyde—when those doors open, a wall of sound envelopes you and the bass pulls you out like a riptide.
