What we think
Like the Del Coronado in San Diego or the Greenbrier in West Virginia, the Breakers is one of America’s classic resort destinations. Founded in 1896 by oil magnate Henry Morrison Flagler, the Breakers is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is still owned by Flagler descendants. The main mansion, housing the majority of the 538 guestrooms, was inspired by 15th-century Italian architecture, as its twin Belvedere towers are patterned after the Villa Medici in Rome. The family reinvests $30 million annually to maintain and update the property, which could mean refreshing a block of hotel rooms (recently the poolside bungalows were equipped with daybeds, open-sky showers and wet bars) or adding a restaurant like HMF, designed by Adam Tihany. Here, old-fashioned Palm Beach cocktail culture has made a comeback with drinks like fresh fruit daiquiris. If you’re interested in the Breakers’ most exclusive experience, book a suite in the Flagler Club, a private-access “hotel within a hotel,” located in the main lodges’ sixth and seventh floors. There’s also a golf academy, a 17-suite spa (serious sybarites should book the 4.5-hour Spa Suite Experience, which includes a body wrap, seaweed bath, and custom massage) and snorkeling tours a half mile off the coast.
You're here because
You’re looking for an all-American oceanfront resort that has a beach town’s worth of shops, restaurants and activities.
The Moment
You've snagged a table in the light-filled Circle restaurant for the resort’s famous brunch, a Sunday tradition for more than 25 years.
