Mauna Lani

Auberge Resorts Collection

What it is

A storied Kona-Kohala coast legend made new by Auberge Resorts Collection, with five locally-inspired restaurants, a farm-to-spa wellness haven, and two famed 18-hole golf courses.

What it isn't

A trek to the beach. Mauna Lani features a kid-friendly swimmable beach, three celebrated surf breaks, and sought-after snorkel spots that come to life with tropical fish, Green sea turtles and more.

What we think

When you hear the words “Hawaiian paradise,” you’re likely picturing something that looks just like Mauna Lani. From this palm-dotted promised land on the untrammeled beaches of the Kohala Coast, Hawaiian bucket list activities abound: as a guest here, you can snorkel amid some 600 species of tropical fish in the coral reefs just off the shore; paddle outrigger canoes with a pro; take the resort’s new 42-foot Yellowfin powerboat on a coastal journey; and even weave baskets from coconut fronds. Guest rooms are equally authentic to Hawaii, with textural interiors (hardwoods and sandy-hued tactile fabrics abound) and furnished lanai balconies that are the perfect perch for taking in the salty air with a flute of bubbly in-hand. Did we mention even starter rooms start at 520 square feet? Maybe that’s why they call this The Big Island.

You're here because

If you visit in the Winter and early Spring months, you may spot some 40-ton Humpback Whales breaching off of Mauna Lani’s legendary coastline.

The Moment

Cocktails always taste better al fresco, but arguably best at Hā Bar, straddling the pool, verdant green lawns and the frothy Pacific. After sipping Mauna Lani’s signature Lani Tai, made with local rum and macadamia nut orgeat syrup, you feel as footloose as the sandpipers you spotted along the sand this morning—and instantly order another.

Location

On the white sand beaches of Hawaii’s Kona-Kohala Coast, roughly 25 - 30 minutes North of Kona International Airport (KOA). A 5-minute walk from the resort: Kalāhuipua’a Historic Park, where you can explore ancient lava fields and royal fish ponds stocked with awa (Hawaiian milkfish).
