Honolulu, Oahu
The Kahala Hotel and Resort
Hawaii on High
What it is
A storied oceanfront high-rise with a Michelin-starred chef, an exquisite spa and a dolphin-stocked lagoon
What it isn't
Lacking star power. Everyone from Frank Sinatra to Queen Elizabeth II has vacationed here; Honolulu native President Barack Obama stays in a private home when he’s here, but frequently dines at the hotel’s Hoku restaurant.
What we think
Staffers here are so doting they’ll learn your name by heart—and remember it on your next visit. It’s just one of the myriad ways The Kahala lives up to the hype. Elegant “starter” guest rooms are fitted with deep soaking tubs, Frette linens, high-tech Japanese Toto washlets, and private Juliet balconies; upgrade to the 1,250-square-foot Kahala Kai Suite, inspired by a Ralph Lauren vision of Hawaii, to curl up on a four post bed and sip your evening cocktails on a sweeping balcony overlooking a dolphin lagoon. Any Signature Suite booking includes perks galore, including a VIP Kahala lei greeting, daily breakfasts, SUV airport transfers, cocktail hour and even Lomi Lomi massages for two—a.k.a. The movie star treatment.
You're here because
Illustrious former guests of the hotel include the Dalai Lama, Angelina Jolie, Liz Taylor, Justin Timberlake, and Robert Redford—and what’s good enough for all of them will be more than fine for you.
The Moment
Chef Jonathan Mizkami spent 10 years as sous chef at The French Laundry, so you’re not surprised the menu at Hoku’s is divine. What you *are* surprised by: the herb-roasted American wagyu steak with sauce charcuterie is the best steak you’ve ever had by a mile. Yes, in Hawaii.
