Viceroy Chicago

Hip high-rise

What it is

A gleaming tower rising from a 120-year-old landmark, with 180 stylish rooms and an 18th floor rooftop seasonal pool and cocktail bar.

What it isn't

Hungry. There are two restaurant options here, including Somerset—tucked within the original 1920s Cedar Hotel, with a menu inspired by the American country club set (order the smoked salmon on crispy latkes with dill cream and pickled onion).

What we think

Chicago has no shortage of head turning hotel stays, but something about Viceroy Hotel Chicago is sure to stand the test of time. The interior design look in the guest rooms? An industrial Art Deco style that feels right at home in the capital of Midwestern design—and comes with perks like Natura Bisse toiletries, a rain shower and Nespresso machines. (We recommend upgrading to a Grand Lake View King for a roomier floor plan, with 442 square feet of breathing room and, yes, glimpses of Lake Michigan’s surf.) For a residential feel, opt for the Junior Suite with Terrace, which has a charmingly furnished outdoor patio and a deep spa-like soaking tub.

You're here because

You’re on a fitness kick, and the hotel values wellness—note their fleet of loaner bikes, tricked out fitness center, and insider access to Aire Ancient Baths—where you can plunge in multiple pools, from ice-cold to piping hot, and even a sensory isolating Floatarium pod with enough salt to mimic the Dead Sea.

The Moment

Splayed out on a poolside daybed on the sceney rooftop, you’re not sure your Chicago jaunt could be going any better. Until, that is, a waiter from the poolside Devereaux lounge stops by to take your order. Tonight? Sliders with truffle aioli and crispy onions, plus a Voodoo Boogie rum, pomegranate and lime cocktail. What happens in Chicago, stays in Chicago.

Restaurants & Bars

Devereaux - rooftop lounge and seasonal pool set on the 18th floor, offering craft cocktails and small bites

Somerset - serves seasonal American cuisine from Chef Stephen Gillanders

Location

On Chicago’s Gold Coast, three blocks from the frothy shoes of Lake Michigan and sandy Oak Street Beach, where you can dip your toes in the waves and often dive in, thanks to resident lifeguards.
