Waldorf Astoria Chicago

Francophile High Rise

What it is

A 215-room ultra-glam hotel tucked within 19 stories overlooking the Gold Coast, with a lap pool wise enough to offer adults-only hours.

What it isn't

Tasteless. The hotel is home to two restaurants by Michael Mina, including a French patisserie with the best croissants and palmiers you’ve ever had.

What we think

Tufted headboards. Velvet sofas. Glitzy silver touches at every turn. Rooms at the Waldorf Astoria Chicago handily conjure the grandeur the name evokes. We love that every single room here is as expansive as the view out the windows, and fitted with a flickering gas fireplace, wet bar (complete with microwave and fridge, for the homiest effect) and white marble-lined bathroom. The property’s gym is dedicated to pilates and gyrotonics—in addition to the usual fare—so if you check-out feeling as lithe as a ballerina, that’s why.

You're here because

You learned long ago that Waldorf Astoria spas are some of the best on the planet, and this one has a eucalyptus steam room and relaxation lounge (in addition to that sleek lap pool).

The Moment

With the jazz trio Mike Dangeroux Band perking up the atmosphere for weekend brunch in Margeaux Brasserie, you start to feel like you’re back in Paris. And then your waiter sets your brioche French toast with Tahitian vanilla, blueberry, and meyer lemon curd before you, and it’s settled: you basically are.
