Pray, Montana

Sage Lodge

Wild Wonder

What it is

On a riverside perch just 35 minutes from Yellowstone National Park, with a Montana-inspired spa, two locavore restaurants and a seemingly bottomless activities list.

What it isn't

Lacking anything. Yep, there’s 1,200 acres of hiking and biking trails plus a private trout-casting pond for fly-fishing a la “A River Runs Through It,” right on site. But there’s also an expertly stocked library and steam room for indoorsy people.

What we think

Lodges in Montana can tend to marr the landscape—there’s just so much for them to live up to, with the cinematic sweep of mountain ranges and stars twinkling in an inky sky come nightfall. Guest rooms here are everything Montana retreats should be, with a gas fireplace, private balcony overlooking the aptly-named Paradise Valley, and terrycloth bathrobes ideal for sipping Nespresso in while you plan the day’s exploits. And that’s just the “starter” category. Upgrade to a Lodge Paradise King room for 630-square-feet of breathing space, including a deep soaking tub and an outdoor fireplace on your patio with postcard-worthy views. Bringing a crowd? Try one of their 2,783-square-foot ranch houses, each one tricked out Montana-style with double-sided gas fireplaces, four guest rooms behind barn doors, and soaring ceilings and windows that perfectly frame a panorama over the adjacent mountains.

You're here because

You don’t have time to plan your vacay “to do” list, and the resort makes it easy, with curated activities that range from hiking with llamas (they’ll carry your bag of snacks, natch) to a plein air painting class overlooking the Absaroka mountains.

The Moment

Today in the spa, massaged with stones pulled from the Yellowstone River and CBD cream, you don’t think you could get more relaxed. Until you remember the only thing left on your itinerary today is tucking into a grass fed ribeye from Cowgirl Meat Co. in Big Timber, Montana. Aaaaah.

Restaurants & Bars

The Grill - rustic Montana meets contemporary steakhouse

The Fireside Room - casual Montana restaurant experience combining indoor and outdoor gathering spaces

Hugging the Yellowstone River bank, a half hour drive from Yellowstone National Park. You won’t want to miss a steep in nearby Chico Hot Springs, where everyone from the Blackfoot tribe to gold rush miners have bathed in the geothermally-heated mineral water.
