Triple Creek Ranch

The epitome of outdoorsy luxury

What it is

Intimate, nature-oriented luxury in the Rockies.

What it isn't

A place for kids or cell phone addicts (there's no service here).

What we think

A consistent winner of best-hotel-in-the-world awards, Triple Creek Ranch sets the standard for the boutique, outdoorsy resort experience. The feeling here is intimate and personality-driven, thanks to owners Craig and Barbara Barrett, who were regular guests for years before buying the property so it could remain a hotel. The Barretts are often in residence and happy to guide guests through their collection of important western art, which includes classic works by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Or they'll suggest activities in the stunning Bitterroot Valley setting: everything from fly-fishing to skiing to gem-panning is on offer. Must-do's include dogsledding in winter and cattle drives in summer (both come at an extra cost—but the food and much of the resort experience is all-inclusive). The 23 rooms consist of log cabins and private homes that combine rustic style with five-star amenities (hot tubs, granite countertops, fireplaces, satellite TV—but there's no cell service). A Relais & Châteaux property, the resort is renowned for its food, with a dinner menu that changes each night and a superb wine cellar with more than 700 selections.

Note: No children under 16 permitted.

You're here because

You want to experience nature—but have no intention of actually going back to nature.

The Moment

The sled rounds a snow-covered ridge and the Rocky Mountains emerge on the horizon, and the only sound you hear is the panting of the dogs and the crunch of the snow beneath their paws.
