Charlotte, North Carolina
A Luxury Collection Hotel
What it is
A grand, sprawling estate on miles of manicured lawns and an 18-hole golf course.
What it isn't
A classic, Southern B&B. This place is superbly comfortable, but not a homey inn.
What we think
A perfect blend of warm Southern hospitality and professional poise, the Ballantyne sits on miles of picture perfect green lawns, just south of Charlotte. The Starwood property’s elegant grounds are tranquil, but hold a bevy of activity: everything from tennis courts to resistance pools, a 16-room spa to an 18-hole golf course.
The hotel’s 214-room grand postmodern building is complemented by a 35-room lodge and a four-bedroom cottage. The rooms are styled to be simple and elegant: ceilings sweep up ten feet, fresh apples and flowers perch on lacquered tables and glass doors open to balconies overlooking the estate’s golf course and acres of manicured gardens and lawns.
Downstairs, art lines the walls of the aptly named Gallery. The hotel’s restaurant serves upscale comforting fare — think the largest Scotch collection in the Carolina's and 100% USDA graded prime steak served with the season’s freshest accompaniments. Veranda, also aptly named, is the spot to sip a cappuccino or a glass of wine and look over the rollings greens. The day spa on the ground level is worth wandering into; though the expansive spa menu is quite possibly the culprit for more than one missed tee-time.
You're here because
You want something classic and grand - a Southern gem that’s close enough to the city to venture out, but far enough outside of the city limits so you can practice your golf stance.
Pinky up, you lift your Earl Grey from its porcelain saucer. Empty tiered trays of finger sandwiches and confections are waltzed from chirping guests and locals back into the kitchens to be refilled. Through the grand windows, acres of perfect lawn are dotted with golfers.
