Newport, Rhode Island
Newport Harbor Island Resort
Island Idyll
What it is
A 257-room resort on Goat Island in Newport’s Narragansett Bay, with a saltwater pool and indulgent spa.
What it isn't
Faking the whole “nautical” vibe. The resort has a 22-slip marina ready to accept 125-foot-long ships.
What we think
Great service is part of the package at this gem, where guests have free-range access to everything from the 24-hour gym to the gratis shuttle from Goat Island to downtown Newport (established: 1784). Rooms are gynormous; even the starter category begins at 429-square-feet. We like that they’re beachy, but not cloyingly so, with subtle stripes, blonde woods and navy piped bed linens. (Luxe touches: granite counters, LED-lit mirrors in the bathroom and iPod docking stations for setting the literal tone). Proof the resort puts your needs above all else? They have free yoga classes and a staffer whose title is literally “Director of Fun.”
You're here because
It has Newport’s lone outdoor pool. And come summer, that’s unbeatable. (Don’t worry, the hotel also has a pristine heated indoor pool ready to play host to cannonballs in the frigid winter).
The Moment
You walked the entire coastline of Newport’s Cliff Walk, ogling centuries-old estates galore in the frothy sea mist, and now, your dogs are barking. Nothing a steam in the spa’s dry eucalyptus sauna and Seawater pedicure won’t fix. Bliss.

Location
A mere mile from downtown Newport on Goat Island. You’ll want to stop in at the White Horse Tavern (since 1673, decades before George Washington was even born) for a rum cocktail. Don’t miss a tour of The Breakers, the Gilded Age home of the Vanderbilts and an American “Downton Abbey” sprung to life.
