Newport, Rhode Island
The Chanler At Cliff Walk
Icon on the Sea
What it is
A perfectly restored 19th-century manse with 20 thematic suites (each more exquisite than the last).
What it isn't
Cramped. The property is set on vast manicured grounds that overlook Newport’s Easton’s Beach.
What we think
When your neighbors are literal Vanderbilts’, it’s safe to say you’re in good company. The Chanler is Gilded Age reborn anew, a place where #perfection is more than a hashtag (just note all their five star reviews from guests). Here, you can choose your preferred room style—be it Greek Revival or French Provincial; upgrade to an Ocean Villa like the nautically-bent “Nantucket” for a gas fireplace and your own sequestered outdoor hot tub peeping out on the beach below. Unsurprisingly, service here is as top-notch as it gets; you’ll be sipping complimentary sparkling wine at check-in and whirling around town in chauffeured Buick’s or Tokyobikes, two-wheelers that make idyllic picnic companions.
You're here because
You’ve never felt like royalty before, but you’re starting to think you deserve it—at least on vacay. The Chanler allows you to book everything from an aromatherapy bath drawn to your specifications (grapefruit and juniper berry, please!) to pre-stocking your room with Russian Crown Caviar and bubbly. Yeah—it’s gonna be a good trip.
When you step foot in the Cara, the hotel’s French, Italian, and Spanish restaurant set over the sea, you know why it’s racked up so many awards. Everyone, at every table, is practically glowing (and no, it’s not the candlelight). One fork-full of your Wagyu ribeye with celery root and chanterelle’s and you’re aglow, too. Bring on another bottle of cabernet—and step lively!
Set on a prime piece of Newport’s tony Cliff Walk of seafront estates, overlooking Easton Bay and its namesake beach. The Breakers, the storied mansion of the Vanderbilt’s that’s essentially America’s Downton Abbey, is just a mile down the Cliff Walk.
