The New Glamour

What it is

A glitzy new retreat with 179 traditionally-tailored rooms, a spa and a rooftop heated pool flanked by tv-stocked cabanas.

What it isn't

Hungry. The four on-site restaurants include Gabrielle, helmed by Executive Chef Remy Funfrock and an ode to lowcountry edible deliciousness. On the menu? Charbroiled oysters in roasted garlic butter and herbed breadcrumbs, and local shrimp with bacon lardons atop Geechie Boy white grits.

What we think

Charleston isn’t suffering for charming hotels, but the city founded as Charles Town in 1670 could certainly have used something like this: a modern Southern belle with ladylike style to spare. Take the guest rooms, decked in a pristine palette of whites, creams and golds, each one stocked with tufted headboards, pedestal tubs and marble vanities in the bathrooms, and cushy amenities (plush terry cloth robes, Nespresso machines and twice-daily housekeeping among them). Upgrade to a Premier King with Terrace for 440-square-feet of space, plus an outdoor dining area overlooking the centuries-old steeples and rooftops below, not to mention Club access—with all the pampering (a VIP concierge plus snacks and tipples galore) that comes with it.

You're here because

Charlestonians have been buzzing about it for literally two decades. And yes, it was worth the wait. And where else but this spa can you get a Blue Diamond facial?

The Moment

You’ll admit it: you’re obsessed with pink. So you have to exhale a very contented sigh when you first step foot in Camellias, the hotel’s champagne lounge, where the egg-shaped room’s pink marble floors were actually repurposed from the local library. You settle into your pink leather armchair under the twinkle of the crystal chandelier, and order a flute of Veuve Clicquot’s “Yellow Label” and a lemon meringue tart. This is living.

Restaurants & Bars

Gabrielle - Coastal Carolina cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Michael Sichel

La Patisserie - Selection of artisanal sandwiches, prepared sides and sweet delicacies, like macarons and éclairs crafted by renowned French Pastry Chef Remy Funfrock

Fiat Lux - Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with an expansive spirit selection

Camellias - Champagne Bar, with an extensive collection of offerings paired with a selection of caviar, ceviche and tartar

39 Rue De Jean - Parisian cuisine, hand crafted beers and affordable wines

Location

Adjacent to Marion Square, just three blocks from the Aiken-Rhett House Museum; unlike other historic homes in the area, the 1820 estate was untouched by conservators, making it an unvarnished (if slightly creepy) walk through history.
