The Dewberry

New Southern Comfort

What it is

A 155-room hotel tailor-made for the Instagram generation.

What it isn't

Faux. The 2016 property is housed in the throwback Mendell Rivers Federal Building; interiors were perfected over eight years with hand-hewn and antique furniture.

What we think

Charleston is undoubtedly a gem of the Eastern seaboard; generations upon generations have flocked to her Spanish moss–hung streets for R&R. But as with any grande dame, sometimes she can feel a little tired. Enter The Dewberry—fresh as, well, morning dew—which lit up the city anew upon opening. Rooms feature Vermont marble bathrooms, Stickley armoires with hidden, hand-painted wallpaper by local artist Becca Barnet and linen bedding imported from Ireland. Ask for a room with a cast-iron soaking tub for the full pre-war Scarlett O’Hara experience. And don’t miss cocktail lessons with mixologist Ryan Casey at the brass bar—and the next morning, an 8th-floor rooftop yoga class to work it off.

You're here because

Who are you kidding—you “did it for the ‘gram” (everything, and we mean everything, is beautiful). But on a more serious note, the mahogany-lined low-country restaurant serves the best shrimp and grits—and cheddar biscuits—you’ve ever had.

The Moment

Occasionally, even an absolute dream vacation can be exhausting. After a day of exploring Charleston, there’s no better boost than The Dewberry’s carriage house–inspired spa, lined by local cypress. The Atlantic Ocean facial is more refreshing than a dip in the adjacent sea.
