Commodore Perry Estate

Auberge Resorts Collection

What it is

The 10-acre walled estate of a 1920s real estate kingpin newly refreshed for modern aesthetes, with 54 exquisite guestrooms, an inventive restaurant and a dreamy pool.

What we think

Upon stepping foot onto the verdant grounds of the Commodore Perry Estate, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in Europe—not Texas. But Texas it is, especially when you look closely enough. There’s the crispy fried chicken and sticky ribs at locavore restaurant Lutie’s, helmed by chef couple Bradley Nicholson (who worked at Copenhagen’s Amass) and Susana Querejazu (who staged at Le Meurice, in Paris, under Alain Ducasse). There’s the fact that music is paramount: the hotel has a cocktail hour in their Listening Room on Saturdays (with a Gramophone!), and every Thursday evening, Austin musicians take the stage for live shows in the hotel’s sunken gardens. But the rooms—which feel centuries old, with Juliette balconies, curated art and antiques and plush rugs underfoot atop the wood floors—those are pure Europe. Upgrade to Mr. and Mrs.’s Perry’s Suite for a 1,578-square-foot retreat in the original mansion, with two bedrooms, deep soaking tubs, and a cocktail cart you can customize for your own go-to tipples.

You're here because

The hotel provides gratis wheels—from the house Mercedes to loaner Linus bicycles.

The Moment

There’s no better picnic than one prepared lovingly by...a professional chef. Sitting by a gurgling water fountain, you and your partner feel a little like you’re opening a present as you explore the contents of the basket before you. Local cheeses? Champagne on ice? The most beautiful loaf of bread you’ve seen since you were bicycling the Loire Valley? You’re literally salivating.

Restaurants & Bars

Luties - Garden-style restaurant serving food with ingredients picked from the in-house garden and local farms

Location

In Austin’s historic Hancock neighborhood, just three miles from downtown. If you don’t get the divine breakfast tacos (with handmade corn tortillas, of course) at Veracruz All Natural at least thrice during your trip, you’ll regret it.
