The Joule Dallas

Deco Delight

What it is

A 1927 darling of Dallas in a neo-Gothic facade, with a magnetic food scene and 129 glammed-up rooms.

What it isn't

Dull. Every inch is seemingly fitted with the hotels’ MoMa-worthy art collection (look for Andrew Kuo’s graphic “Everything I Know is Probably Wrong” and any of 70 mosaics by Millard Sheets).

What we think

For aesthetes, guest room experiences don’t get any better than this. Even the “starter” rooms here are a cozy delight, including Merbau wood floors, Italian millwork, leather headboards, Sferra sheets, rain showers and even Taschen books awaiting your studious perusal. If you feel like spreading out (this is Texas, after all), it’s well-worth upgrading to a Deluxe Loft Suite for 1,000-square-feet of split-level space complete with a soaking tub where you can drown every one of your sorrows the old fashioned way. Foodies on the lam will adore each one of the property’s seven on-site bars and restaurants; you won’t want to miss the sour cocktails at Midnight Rambler, a subterranean bar helmed by the people behind New York City’s Cuffs & Buttons.

You're here because

The spa has a deeply beautiful sculpture-lined indoor pool that looks like it could have been a backdrop in Cruel Intentions, in the best possible way.

The Moment

You’ve always felt bookshops could rake it in if they also served Middleton-worthy afternoon teas, and are delighted to find Tea at Taschen—that exact idea, done to a, well, tee in their Taschen library. As you lift your gilt-edged teacup to your lips and eye the petit fours, you’re both vindicated and revived. And the caffeine hasn’t even hit yet.

In downtown Dallas, across the street from the 30-foot-high Giant Eyeball that is, apparently, the Big D’s answer to Chicago’s Bean Sculpture.
