Marfa, Texas

Hotel Saint George

Contemporary, Distinctively Marfa

What it is

A modern 55-room retreat in the famed (and super-remote) art town, with an oasis-like outdoor pool and hipster-stocked restaurants.

What it isn't

Cramped. This being Texas, they went big: rooms start at 400-square-feet and top out at 1,300-square-feet.

What we think

Among certain members of the creative cognoscenti, Marfa, TX (population: 1,714) is a pilgrimage. This is, after all, both where Donald Judd installed his famed 340-acre Chinati Foundation museum in the 70s, and where James Dean, Liz Taylor, Rock Hudson and other luminaries holed up to film Giant. Hotel Saint George installed another level of intergalactic “cool” to the teensy town when it opened a couple years ago. Rooms are stylish without being cloying, with platform beds, mirrored walls and sheep hides by the bedside for cozy warmth underfoot (at an elevation of 4,685-feet, Marfa can get chilly after dark).

You're here because

Boldfaced names flock here (we once spotted Connie Britton and her perfect hair on-site), and you find that’s reason enough to go.

The Moment

There is nothing—nothing—like slipping into a cool turquoise pool in the west Texas heat. But this one is more glitterati-ready than most, you find, with streamlined gray daybeds and a menu that has you salivating on sight. You sip your Ranch Water cocktail, then move on to something more serious: a trio of grilled veggie tacos, the best you’ve had in Texas.

Restaurants & Bars

Location

Smack dab in the middle of Marfa, which is a 6 and a half hour drive from Austin. Don’t miss walking to The Capri—helmed by Chef Rocky Barnette (formerly of the Michelin-starred Inn at Little Washington)—for what may be the best steak you’ve ever had, cooked over local mesquite. Another must? Driving 36 miles into the desert to see Prada Marfa, a permanent art installation by Elmgreen & Dragset.
