Green Bay, Wisconsin

Hotel Northland

An Autograph Collection Hotel

What it is

A cinematic 1924 icon with 160 rooms, Art Deco interiors, and a legendary bar in the Walnut Room that’s been beloved for generations.

What it isn't

Pudgy. Yes, this town likes its beer and cheese, but the hotel has a tricked out 24-hour gym overlooking the cityscape.

What we think

Everyone from John F. Kennedy to the Green Bay Packers have laid their weary heads at the Hotel Northland, and thanks to a recent revamp, it’s arguably more alluring than ever. Guest rooms are now charmingly decorated with pattern-on-pattern interiors (warming up frigid Wisconsin winters), and are outfitted with marble bathrooms, reading chairs with ottomans, and LED TV’s hooked up to HBO and Netflix if you feel like lounging in the plush provided robes and ordering room service. But there’s plenty of fun to be had outside your room, thanks to on-site eateries like Poke the Bear: a boisterous pub where you can kick back with Wisconsin cheese curds and deviled eggs topped with Candied bacon. When it comes to comfort food, Midwesterners do it best.

You're here because

They have an on-site car rental, and trips to Wisconsin practically require leaf-peeping (in autumn) and roadside pie buying (in summer).

The Moment

You have had a week, so when you belly up to the well-worn bar in the Walnut Room, you know just what to order: a Corpse Reviver No. 2 cocktail with gin, Lillet, Cointreau, Absinthe and Lemon. One sip, and you’re feeling brand new.

Restaurants & Bars

Walnut Room - Enjoy American comfort food in this Green Bay institution that first opened in 1924

Poke the Bear - Extensive bar menu with an upbeat, sports-focused atmosphere

Location

Just a nine mile drive from Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, and a two block walk from the Fox River. History buffs can walk across that river to get to Neville Public Museum, where permanent exhibits include ancient fossils found in the state.
