Eichardt's Private Hotel

Lakeside Luxury

What it is

An 1867 gold rush icon that’s as glossier than ever, with a storied bar and spa housed in the original gold vault.

What it isn't

Boring. Exclusive experiences here range from cruising Lake Wakatipu on their 80-foot super-yacht and helicopter jaunts over the fiords.

What we think

Eichardt’s is something of a legend in Queenstown, having pampered locals and visitors in extreme luxury for more than a century (it was the first hotel in town wired for electricity). Guests will find it especially alluring these days, thanks to royal-worthy in-room amenities: a fireplace, soaking tub, underfloor heating (and even a heated mirror that will never fog), Molton Brown toiletries, and king beds topped with plush faux fur throws. To spread out in sumptuous splendor, book one of their apartments; they overlook Lake Wakatipu from their separate greenhouse-like lounge areas. Best of all, guests in any room category are treated to gratis pre-dinner cocktails and bountiful breakfasts (at The Grille, be sure to order the decadent belgian waffles with lemon curd, vanilla mascarpone and poached berries).

You're here because

Eichardt’s Bar, erected on the premises of a former woolshed, has some of the most toothsome cocktails in town. Our fave: the Smoked Old Fashioned, with flamed orange zest.

The Moment

Tucked away in the former gold vault, the hotel’s spa has you breathing easier than ever thanks to your lomilomi back massage and Manuka honey facial. The only thing better? Knowing as soon as you’re done, you’ll have high tea. This is living.
