La Paz, Bolivia
Atix Hotel
Artful Hideaway
What it is
A modernist 53-room tower with two buzzing restaurants (including a rooftop bar with postcard-worthy floor to ceiling views) and a famous buffet breakfast—comped for guests.
What it isn't
Wasteful. The property was built using entirely Bolivian materials, like comanche stone and flagstone, plus furniture made locally by the region’s artisans. And the vast majority of the food—whipped up by a staff of Bolivians—was grown locally, too.
What we think
Atix garnered a constellation of design awards when it opened, thanks to pieces hung in every room by Bolivian artist Gaston Ugalde and sleek-yet-welcoming interiors, with herringbone wood walls and a contemplative color palette of blues and grays. Urbanites won’t miss a thing here: each room is fitted with a rain shower, office space, and zippy free wi-fi. (Ask for one with a private terrace). Because rooms begin at 251 square feet, we might recommend upgrading to the Atix Suite, which has 602 square feet of breathing room, including a lounge area, private balcony, and sky-high ceilings with walls of windows—plus a bubbling jacuzzi tub. We highly recommend spending at least one night with a bubble bath, ordering room service, then curling up in the locally woven alpaca blanket for a cozy night in.
You're here because
The service is fab, including 24-hour room service and concierge, plus turndown each and every night.
The Moment
At the 7th floor +591 Bar, named for the La Paz area code, the house cocktails are inspired by Bolivia's most toothsome foodstuffs. You can’t help but order a hibiscus tipple: with gin, curuba (a type of passionfruit), orange, and hibiscus syrup that transports you instantly to the rainforest.

Location
Central La Paz, within a few blocks of most of Bolivia’s world consulates and embassies. A block away: New Tokyo, a sushi joint founded by Japanese expats and absolutely beloved by the locals (get the trout sashimi and honeyed shrimp tempura and cream cheese sushi).
