What surprises us most about Ka’ana isn’t the guided activities list, which includes things like horseback riding to ancient Mayan archeological sites, snorkeling alongside nurse sharks in a barrier reef and kayaking through two miles of underground caverns. It’s that you return home to the hotel for freshly-made ceviche and mango-glazed lamb shank, washed down with wines from the 1,000-bottle-deep wine cellar (Insignia Joseph Phelps bordeaux, anyone?). Ka’ana perfectly executes what so many resorts are trying: blending a real sense of place with luxury standards. It’s worth it to splurge on a villa for your own plunge pool after a day in the saddle.
