What it is

A retro-chic luxury hotel in a historic Midtown building.

What it isn't

A quiet retreat: Times Square and its 24-hour crowds are just outside the door.

What we think

A landmark designed by famed architect Stanford White, the 1905 building that houses the Chatwal was originally built for the Lambs, the country's oldest theatrical society (Irving Berlin, Fred Astaire and John Barrymore were all members). A $100 million renovation turned it into the most luxurious stay in the Times Square area, but it maintains plenty of nods to its dashing past. The lobby is a glamorous Art Deco showpiece glittering with bright red accents, echoed in the always-hopping mezzanine bar. In the Lambs Club restaurant, power lunchers dine on red leather banquettes by a roaring fireplace. Upstairs, the 76 rooms and suites continue the retro-chic theme, with framed World's Fair posters, backgammon sets, glass Noguchi tables and leather desks that resemble steamer trunks. Bathrooms are huge, all mirrored walls and polished black tile, plus niceties like walk-in showers and Japanese toilets. It all adds up to a sophisticated, Gatsby-esque sensibility that pays homage to the Theater District of old while providing contemporary comforts.

You're here because

You're lured to the convenience of Times Square—but need an antidote to its neon intensity.

The Moment

You've been nursing your Manhattan at the bar, lingering mostly so you can eavesdrop on the conversations surrounding you: bankers, publishers, PR consultants. Suddenly the concierge strides up: he scored you two orchestra seats for the hit Broadway show!
