Raffles Singapore

History Reborn

What it is

An 1887 grande dame that just re-emerged from a total revamp.

What it isn't

Tired. Sure, she’s more than 130 years old, but after her reno she’s looking fresh as any Singaporean new-build.

What we think

When Crazy Rich Asians decided to film at this storied hotel, we weren’t surprised. The flagship property of Raffles Hotels & Resorts plays the part of ornate luxury exceedingly well (perhaps even Oscar worthily), and has since the very beginning. The 19th century structure was the first hotel in the area to have electricity and ceiling fans, and the Singapore Sling was invented here in the carved wood-lined Long Bar way back in 1915. Coming after the revamp? Themed suites (we’re pre-booking the Lady Mountbatten Suite now), a holistic Raffles spa with both ladies and gentlemen’s lounges, and restaurants by Chef Anne-Sophie Pic (the fourth female chef on the planet to earn three-Michelin stars for a restaurant under her charge) and some guy named Alain Ducasse.

You're here because

When possible, you prefer to stay where royals and glamazons have slept, and everyone from Karl Lagerfeld to Elizabeth Taylor crashed here (Liz in both 1957 and 1993). It’s not that you’re full of yourself—it’s just that momma didn't raise no fool.

The Moment

You can’t help but feel like you’re in a movie set in this hotel, but the feeling grows even more pronounced in your own suite (and by the way: every room’s a suite here). Perhaps it’s the 14-foot-high ceilings, or the teakwood floors buffed to a high gloss. Or maybe it’s the fact that, after a night of carousing, as you recline to read your pillow menu (yes, there’s a pillow menu) at 1 a.m., you consider calling your 24-hour Butler. If that level of service is not worthy of the most discriminating movie star, you don’t know what is.
