What it is

An 1865 hideaway made newly modern

What it isn't

Bloody boring. If you want an excuse to do nothing, look elsewhere.

What we think

You know a hotel is great when the guestbook includes boldface names. When it includes such names as Elizabeth Taylor, Muhammad Ali, Winston Churchill, Cary Grant and Oscar Wilde, though, it’s not just great. It’s a legend. Those luminaries and others came here when the Café Royal was just a restaurant—albeit one famous for its wine cellar and literary salons. They'd probably come back, if they could, now that it's a hotel, one brilliantly reimagined by David Chipperfield Architects. They might sling back a G&T (from a selection of 17 gins) in an emerald green cocktail boîte or tuck into Battenberg cake (the same recipe made for the 1884 royal wedding) during afternoon tea at the gilded and mirrored Oscar Wilde Bar. The 160 rooms are as au courant as a Middleton’s haircut, with Portland stone walls, Frette linens and rainfall showers in the Carrara marble-lined bathrooms.

You're here because

Diana, Princess of Wales, used to grab lunch in "The Café," and what was good enough for her is great for you.

The Moment

After a day spent shopping New Bond Street, you’re knackered. Which is why dipping into the hotel’s 60-foot-long candlelit lap pool—a rarity in London—is as restorative as summer rain.

Restaurants & Bars

Continuing its celebrated legacy, Café Royal offers to takes guests on a culinary journey...

At the heart of the hotel, the Ten Room offers British informal dining, all-day while absinthe is revived in the Green Bar in homage to Oscar Wilde (famed patron). The Oscar Wilde Bar, formerly the legendary Grill Room, originally established in 1865, has been exquisitely restored to its original Louis XVI detailing and is now the place to enjoy afternoon tea. Fronting Regent Street, The Café celebrates the European tradition of café culture. The same high levels of service and culinary experiences are also available in the privacy of a guestroom or suite, with in-room dining available 24 hours a day.

Green Bar, Botanicals & Tonics - Inspired by the Café Royal Cocktail Book compiled in 1937, the Green Bar, Botanicals & Tonics at Café Royal is a vibrant cocktail destination for contemporary Londoners and hotel guests. Celebrating the diverse history of the location, the list features Botanicals and Tonics alongside classic cocktail concoctions and a selection of light lunch dishes and small plates. The Botanicals and Tonics are the signature cocktails of the Green Bar where our expert bartenders can mix up the favoured G&T. Choose from a wide variety of 18 gins to partner with 7 different tonics.

Green Bar - As the spirit of Café Royal is revived, so too is the ritual of drinking Absinthe, the favoured tipple of the bohemian intellects who notoriously frequented Café Royal throughout its history. The perfect destination for those from east and west, the Green Bar at Café Royal is a unique addition to London.
