Laucala Island Resort
What it is
A remote Fijian island with 18 holes of golf, five restaurants and 25 villas set among coconut groves—and that’s just the start.
What it isn't
You can’t snow ski here or dine on a glacier, but that’s about it. Still, with rooms starting at $7,000 a night, this isn’t a resort for just anyone.
What we think
With a seemingly unlimited budget, Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz has made Laucala, purchased from Malcolm Forbes, his fantasy island. In a surprising move, he’s invited guests to overnight here—provided they can afford rooms that start in the mid-four figures. The full staff greets you on a private landing strip before being whisked off for a tour of the 18-hole golf course (designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd), equestrian center, marina with 15 boats and hilltop spa. The resort’s five restaurants source ingredients from on-island farms, which travelers can tour to learn about organic and native gardening practices. You might not have the time, though, provided you want to take advantage of some of the other all-inclusive activities. There are Dragon sailboats and traditional Fijian outriggers, as well as wind and kite surfs. You can explore Laucala on one of eight horses and on state-of-the-art mountain bikes, or visit the island’s Cultural Village to learn about Fijian arts and traditions such as palm-frond basket weaving. After dinner, guests sip sundowners in one of 25 villas, built from local stone and timber and equip with outdoor showers and private plunge pools.
You're here because
You’ve earned the ultimate bucket list private island vacation.
In the island’s surrounding turquoise lagoons, you spot rays and hawksbill turtles—by submarine.
Laucala is located in the northern archipelago in Fiji. It is an hour flight from Fiji’s Nadi International Airport.
