What we think
The Metropolitan has consistently attracted the style set since it opened in 1997, but the hotel's overall sensibility has evolved. What began as a see-and-be-seen hot spot, centered on the trendy Met Bar, has turned into a sophisticated boutique property that hews to its designer roots while catering to a more levelheaded crowd. Inside the glass-and-granite 11-story tower overlooking Hyde Park, the formerly white-on-white lobby has been softened with walnut accents and green carpets. Upstairs, the 144 rooms and suites have huge windows that run nearly to the floor, allowing postcard-perfect views. The spaces are vast and uncluttered, with honey-toned furniture of walnut and sycamore. There's an increased emphasis on wellness—a hallmark of the COMO brand—with yoga and other classes, a holistic spa and a 24-hour gym. What remains the same: the miso-marinated black cod at Nobu and the serious cocktails—and sense of exclusivity—at the Met Bar.
