Waimea, Big Island

Fairmont Orchid Hawaii

Hawaii in Bloom

What it is

A beachfront idyll where all 540 rooms have their own lanai (balcony) with expansive views of Kohala Coast.

What it isn't

Crowded. The resort is on 32 seafront acres that will feel at times like they’re your very own.

What we think

The problem with the Big Island is that it’s—well—The Big Island. Everybody knows it, and it’s thereby chockablock with tourists. Fairmont Orchid is a reprieve from the madding crowds, where (almost) anything you could want to do is on property. Lei making? Check. Outrigger canoe paddling? Check. Hiking to a petroglyph field? Check. Of course, if you do nothing but veg by the 10,000-square-foot swimming pool, we won’t bat an eyelash. Rooms are traditional but stocked—toss on your waffle weave bathrobe, put something delicious in the Keurig and watch the sun rise over the turquoise water beyond your terrace. There’s nothing better.

You're here because

Unlike many area resorts, Fairmont Orchid pulls out all the stops if you’re traveling en famille: Kids under five eat free, there’s an on-point children’s program and entire-fam-damily activities include everything from storytelling under the stars to slacklining.

The Moment

You were relaxed the moment you stepped your flip-flopped foot on property, but entering the spa your shoulders drop to a new level of calm. Within a waterfall-facing private hale (hut), as a masseuse works out your kinks with a warm lava rock, you resolve to rip up your return ticket and stay forever—or until your cash runs out.
