Miami Beach, Florida
The Betsy - South Beach
South Beach sophisticate
What it is
A newly expanded nonconformist on Ocean Drive, with Georgian architecture and a cultured soul.
What it isn't
Any less stunning than her Art Deco neighbors. This is where most of the interior design crowd stays when they’re in town.
What we think
Heavens to Betsy, The Betsy is heaven—at least if you love classic Florida. L. Murray Dixon designed the original Georgian-style building (opened as The Betsy Ross in 1941), and the property just expanded to include the neighboring 1937 Carlton Hotel, designed by Henry Hohauser in high Deco style. Interiors are beachy without a whiff of cliché: expect yellow-and-white-striped armchairs, throwback black and white photography and lush palms dotting the lobby. The property just added a second pool—on a rooftop overlooking the skyline—that’s a major thrill for the Betsy’s devoted repeat guests.
You're here because
It’s the most worldly option in the city—with cultural offerings you don’t want to miss, including a summer chamber music program, literary conferences and a beachfront a Cappella Festival each fall that sends shivers down your spine (you’ve seen Pitch Perfect five times and you’re not ashamed to admit it).
The Moment
Paying a visit to the hotel’s Writer’s Room—where authors can apply for brief residencies—you discover the desk once used by three-time Pulitzer finalist Hyam Plutzik—and father of the hotel’s owner. The poet must have left a bit of literary magic on its surface, because you’re inspired to grab your journal and compose some poolside prose.
