Adare Manor

What it is

A fairytale castle on 840 acres, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, award-winning spa and bountiful exploits, from golf to handling sessions with the hotel’s resident gundog Irish Labradors.

What it isn't

Busy-busy-busy. Sure, you’ll never be bored here, but if you’d like to proceed to the spa for La Mer Miracle Broth Facials and plenty of lounging by the turquoise spa in a fluffy whtie robe, be their guest.

What we think

There’s a reason Adare Manor is voted the best resort in Europe year after year. Actually, many reasons, starting with the rooms: often adorned with 19th century etchings and oil paintings, mahogany furniture inspired by the Georgian era, and comforts galore, including a curated minibar, rain shower, soaking tub, and tufted reading chairs that peep out on the River Maigue. The Michelin-starred Oak Room turns heads night after night with both its menu (get the sea bream with langoustine, sweetcorn and spiced bisque) and its atmosphere (candlelit and tucked within the castle’s oak-panelled original dining room). Golfers come from across the globe to play the Tom Fazio-designed course, as green as the emerald’s in Queen Elizabeth II’s Greville necklace.

You're here because

You’re an architecture junkie, and their self-guided architecture and garden tour means you can wander the grounds for days taking in the 365 leaded windows, 7 stone pillars and 52 chimneys, each more intricate than the last.

The Moment

There’s no afternoon tea quite like the one held in the arched gothic Gallery of Adare Manor, built in 1832. That it’s thoroughly Irish—with sandwiches like the West Clare Crab, served on soda bread with Exmoor caviar and pickled shallot—makes it even better.
