Carmel Valley Ranch

Carmel Valley, California

What it is

A chi-chi version of summer camp.

What it isn't

Boring. If you find yourself reaching for the remote, call the police—your soul is missing.

What we think

They say every child must rebel against his or her parents. For John Pritzker, heir to the Hyatt empire, insurrection came in the unlikeliest of forms: turning 500-acre Carmel Valley Ranch into an elevated dude ranch, with archery classes, trail rides at dusk and post-hike yoga overlooking Robinson Canyon. The original Pete Dye-designed 18-hole golf course just had a multimillion-dollar revamp. All room types come with travertine limestone gas fireplaces, soaking tubs and full run of the resort’s bocce court and two saltwater pools.

You're here because

The staff of resident artisans—a beekeeper and lavender expert, an organic farmer, to name a few—means this is anything but a business hotel.

The Moment

Steeping in bubbles with your partner in your private outdoor bathtub, with views of the vineyards and the valley below.

Family activities

A few to mention:

Bee Keeping, Organic Gardening, cooking classes, horse back rising, bird watching, golf programming and family instructions, hiking, farmstead practices - making soap, distilling lavender, playing with the Ranch's chickens, salt making, holiday cooking classes, custom scavenger hunts or geocaching competitions - and it goes on...
