The Soho Hotel

London’s colorful West End character

What it is

A fresh, lively, modern boutique in Soho.

What it isn't

A palatial old world Grande Dame nor contemporary white-on-white digs.

What we think

One of the Firmdale properties, The Soho Hotel is hidden in a brick industrial loft on a quiet street in the center of London’s theater district. Despite the sober facade, the Kit Kemp owned and designed boutique is full of activity and character. The 91 rooms and guest areas are full of Kemp’s rich signature whimsy: they’re tastefully colorful, very British (but modernly so) and full of art that makes a statement (like Botero’s 10-foot bronze cat that greets guests in the lobby.) Through five floors, every room is individually styled with harmoniously clashing textures, patterns and colors: some have fuchsia armchairs that match the bed’s stripes, others have huge floral patterned headboards that pair nicely with the accent walls and drapery. Due to the film crowd’s regular presence, Kemp has designed two screening rooms in the hotel’s basement — one with 100 red leather chairs and one with cowhide loveseats for 45 viewers. Refuel, the hotel’s decadent restaurant, bar and spot for afternoon tea sits right off of the lobby. Inside, the space follows the same eclectic patterning as the rest of the hotel: happily mismatched patterns, walls of art and a decidedly cozy feel. Get the crispy halloumi with grilled eggplant, hummus and rocket topped off with mint dressing.

You're here because

You want something central so you can walk to wherever you need to go. You also want something that feels vibrant, has some character and a buzzing crowd.

The Moment

As the Film Club members finish their smoked salmon and finger sandwiches at Afternoon Tea in Refuel’s dining room, the crowd (guests and locals alike) begins to trickle down to the cowhide loveseats in the basement’s screening room.

Location

Built from the ground up on the site of an old parking lot, The Soho Hotel is on a quiet side street right between Dean and Wardour Streets in the heart of Soho. The neighborhood’s winding streets are filled with cafes, bars, and London’s theaters. The Royal Ballet in Covent Garden and the luxe boutiques on Mount Street in Mayfair are both within easy walking distance.

It’s just under a 45 minutes from Heathrow.
