Ravello, Italy

Palazzo Avino

Old-world seclusion

What it is

A winning combination of elegance and warmth.

What it isn't

Centrally located: Ravello is gorgeous but remote.

What we think

Formerly known as Palazzo Sasso, the Avino is perched on the top of a hill in Ravello, which allows for breathtaking views from everywhere in the property. The pink stucco 12th-century villa has a Venetian feeling, thanks to its Moorish arches and 43 rooms decorated with handmade Vietri tiles, antique rugs and furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries. No two rooms are alike, but the style is consistent throughout the hotel—always fresh, never fusty. The warmth is due in part to the Avino family, which owns the hotel and is involved in day-to-day operations. Mariella Avino will likely greet you at arrival and make sure you stay is memorable. Standout features include an alfresco martini and lobster bar, fine-dining restaurant Rossellini's and the collection of contemporary art. (They had us at "alfresco martinis.") The beach club, about 15 minutes away, has its own seaside restaurant, bathing platform and small swimming pool.

You're here because

You appreciate the secluded location and incredible views.

The Moment

Hitting the treadmill under a white gazebo in the garden, looking out at the sparkling blue water. Hey, gotta work off that martini!

Location

Atop Ravello, an arts-oriented town that owes its charm to its isolation: you're at least a 15-minute drive down the hill to anywhere else on the coast. Consider pairing a stay here with a few nights in Positano or Capri.
