The Wauwinet

Luxury oceanfront refuge

What it is

A classic Nantucket shingled mansion and collection of cottages with private beaches on both the Atlantic Ocean and on Nantucket Bay.

What it isn't

The hotel is adults-only, so it’s not a family retreat.

What we think

The Wauwinet, named for the chief of the Native American tribe that inhabited the eastern section of Nantucket, has a long island history. It welcomed its first guests in 1875 and has hosted dinner parties, dances and clam bakes throughout the decades. Each of the 32 rooms are individually designed with floral bed skirts and upholstered chairs; for more privacy, you can opt to stay in one of the property’s three cottages or the three-bedroom Anchorage House (built in 2015), all of which still have access to hotel amenities like tennis rackets, paddle boards and a DVD library where you can also pick up popcorn. While it’s 15 minutes away from the manicured village of ‘Sconset, guests can hail the Wauwinet Woody, an antique car, for rides into town. Summer residents from all over Nantucket come to dine at Topper’s, the hotel’s in-house restaurant, home to the largest wine collection on the island. The menu changes seasonally, though you can always count on Retsyo Oysters, sourced 300 yards off property. Only hotel guests, though, can join the oystermen on their hunt.

You're here because

You’re looking for a secluded and romantic couple’s retreat with warm, New England design.

The Moment

Overlooking the canvas-sand beach and Nantucket Bay from a wicker lounge chair on the freshly cut lawn. In your right hand, a glass of champagne; in your left, an oyster on the half shell with a dash of lemon.
