Beverly Hills, California
The Peninsula Beverly Hills
Classic looks, unimpeachable service
What it is
An elegant hotel with impeccable service and classic decor.
What it isn't
A glitz-drenched resort with many distractions.
What we think
The five-story, French Chateau–style Peninsula is a bastion of elegance on Santa Monica Boulevard, exhibiting the same traditional classicism as the Hong Kong original (even though the L.A. outpost has only been around since the 1990s). There's a hum in the lobby, especially at afternoon tea, but the overall sensibility is one of serenity and discretion. The 194 rooms and 16 garden villas are hushed and light, with traditional furnishings (floral draperies; Louis XVI chairs). High-tech gadgetry and well-placed pops of color balance out the old-world feel. Up on the roof, the sun-drenched 60-foot pool is surrounded by private cabanas, lounge chairs and a restaurant—a power lunch spot for top Hollywood agents and producers. The service here is polished and personal, the white-uniformed staff performing their duties with the skill and timing of a royal ballet. Don't be surprised if the doorman remembers your name, or a handwritten note welcomes you to the room. The spa is excellent and the Belvedere restaurant one of Los Angeles's most consistent fine-dining experiences.
You're here because
You want to be centrally located, but the lobby-as-runway scene is a bit old at this point. You’re looking for regal treatment with more than an ounce of discretion.
The Moment
The bellman offers you a white-gloved hand as you emerge from the hotel's green Rolls-Royce from your shopping trip on Rodeo Drive (his liveried colleague pulls the shopping bags from the trunk). He ushers you into the lobby and shows you to your table, just in time for afternoon tea.
