Quebec City, Quebec

Auberge Saint Antoine

Riverside Splendor

What it is

Quebec City's best luxury boutique hotel, with an ideal Old Port location and Relais-and-Châteaux level cuisine.

What it isn't

A lackluster new-build. The 95-room hotel is housed in centuries-old buildings, including a former cannon battery.

What we think

It's fitting that the Price family—who have lived here for generations—own both this and the city’s Musée du Fort, or military museum. Built on an arcaheological site, the Auberge pays homage to Quebecois history with an abudance of artifacts displayed throughout the hotel (yes, there’s a gratis tour for guests), but in no way feels like a staid episode of Antiques Roadshow. Rooms are modern and warm, many fitted with brass fixtures, underfloor heating in the bathrooms, and sumptuously upholstered furniture—think velveteen fabrics and nailhead trim. Guests particularly love the choose-your-own-adventure screening room, which feels very much like a private movie theater—one where you’re in charge of the blockbuster (or quiet foreign film; you pick your poison, after all). The staff’s convivial vibe extends to your car; if you park in their indoor heated lot, your ride will be treated to a car wash and even detailing inside.

You're here because

The property is situated on Rue Saint Antoine, one of the dreamiest streets in the province; it essentially feels like you’re in France, without the jet lag. And you’d rather have a view of the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac than stay in its tiny rooms!

The Moment

Newly revamped, Chez Muffy is what Francophile dreams are made of. The hotel’s restaurant takes its cues from both farm and sea, and when you tuck into your venison leg with cranberry jam with buttered beets, you call the waiter—and order another to go.
