Montage Palmetto Bluff

Bluffton, South Carolina

What it is

A 20,000-acre resort with heavy hitting amenities—a private Jack Nicholson golf course and 13-room spa—set on the May River between Savannah and Hilton Head.

What it isn't

An all-inclusive, nor is it in walking distance to a major city or town.

What we think

While it’s only been managed by Montage since 2013, the Palmetto Bluff has a long history in hospitality: A wealthy New York banker settled the property in 1902 and invited guests down from the north annually—they traveled by railroad or steamship—for weeks of lavish house parties. The original structures burned down, but the golden era allure remains thanks to the property’s Southern hospitality, colonial-style architecture and social atmosphere. Depending on how aggressive your golf swing is, recreational activities lean towards leisurely. There’s the private 18-hole signature Jack Nicklaus golf course and golf practice facility, as well as bocce ball courts, croquet lawns, an equestrian center and tennis courts. On the water, you can kayak, go salt or freshwater fishing and take a May River dolphin tour.

You're here because

You want to slow down, have old-fashioned fun and regularly sip five o’clock cocktails on a wild Lowcountry coastline.

The Moment

Enjoying a glass of champagne and hors d’oeuvres at sunset on the Grace, one of the few pre-World War I gas-powered yachts left in the U.S. The boat was recently restored—to the tune of $1 million—and now sports everything from a new engine to a fresh coat of paint.

Location

The resort is located on the May River in South Carolina. It’s 35 minutes from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and 90 minutes from the Charleston International Airport.

Family activities

Remember the childhood thrill of hiding in a wooden shelter among the branches, enjoying a bird’s-eye view of the neighborhood? Relive that excitement at the treehouse in Wilson Village, located on Mount Pelia Road diagonal from RT’s Market, and at the treehouse tucked along the marsh at Moreland. The treehouses and hand-crafted furniture were designed and built by the father-son duo of Wayne and Heath Edwards. The structures wrap around live oaks without touching any part of the tree. The Mount Pelia treehouse has multiple entry and exit points, including a wooden boardwalk, a rope ladder, a metal slide and a zip line connected to an adjacent tree. Two hammocks and a swing set sit nearby for those who need a rest. The grassy, shady setting, with the Village Lagoon only a few yards away, exudes tranquility. The Moreland treehouse provides spectacular views of the surrounding waterways and wilderness for those agile and willing enough to reach its 5-story observation deck.
