Greenough, Montana
The Resort At Paws Up
Over-the-top camping under the Big Sky
What it is
Wilderness adventure—without giving up feather beds.
What it isn't
Ideal for kids under eight, who are restricted from many activities.
What we think
We dread silly coinages like "glamping," which purports to be a more glamorous version of camping. The concept isn't new—African safari lodges have done it forever—but the Resort at Paws Up can claim to have introduced (and perfected) it to the American West. Located in a swoon-worthy swath of Montana's Blackfoot Valley, where "A River Runs Through It" was set, the 37,000-acre cattle ranch includes five canvas-tented, wood-floored campsites with ensuite bathrooms, heated floors, ceiling fans and rustic-chic furniture. A camp butler keeps the fire tended and a camp chef makes s'mores (and more). If you're more of a walls-and-ceilings type, there are 28 full-size homes ranging from one to four bedrooms. (Or split your stay so you can experience both.) Paws Up is less an authentic cowboy ranch than a chill resort with a plethora of wilderness activities: horseback riding, fly-fishing, hiking, river-rafting, archery and more. (However, note that many activities require children to be at least eight). There's also a spa, and dining options that range from rustic to refined.

The Moment
As the hot-air balloon makes its silent, gentle ascent into Montana's Big Sky, you inhale the scent of ponderosa pines and watch bald eagles wheeling above the valley.
