Vieques, Puerto Rico
W Retreat & Spa - Vieques Island
Get trendy on the Caribbean's best island
What it is
A 156-room resort on two palm-lined beaches on Puerto Rico’s Vieques island.
What it isn't
On Puerto Rico’s mainland, so you don’t have easy daytrip access to major cities like San Juan.
What we think
When it comes to exclusive island getaways, the W Retreat & Spa on Vieques Island, just eight miles off of the mainland, is one of the most convenient. The island itself is remarkably quaint—you’ll see villagers on horseback; you won’t see a stoplight—and the majority of it is a nature reserve. If you’re familiar with the W brand, you’ll see a lot of familiar faces around the property. Rooms have the signature W beds and Bliss products and staff members happily remind you that they’re there for “Whatever, Whenever.” Still, a lot sets this property apart. Designed by Patricia Urquiola of the Milan-based Studio Urquiola, among others, the resort looked to recycled materials (wood from furniture shipping containers) and organic forms for its distinctive design. Rooms, most of which have ocean views, all have private terraces or patios, as well as cool tile floors and open-plan bathrooms with steel tubs and bucket sinks. Of the four dining options, Sourcé restaurant is the best for Puerto Rican dishes such as stuffed Caribbean lobster, mofongo (a plantain and egg dish) and colirubia fish, grilled whole. Local ingredients also play a part at the 6,000-square-foot Away Spa, where treatments utilize Puerto Rican coffee grounds and locally grown papaya and noni fruits. Sybarites can head to the beach or bask by the two-story infinity pool, which has an underwater sound system and built-in lounge chairs. If you want to go off property, island locals lead tours of surrounding private beaches, village bars and nature hikes.
You're here because
You want an easy island resort that’s big on amenities and activities while also capitalizing on Puerto Rico’s culture and spirit.
Sitting on a white lounge chair on a catwalk between the two swimming pools with the Mood Menu, a list of cocktails that match your state of mind, in hand. Feeling glamorous? Sip on a fresh fruit Bellini. Is your current mood “retreated”? Perhaps a slow sipping Hemingway, made with dark rum, lime, grapefruit and pomegranate, is a better fit.
