Mandarin Oriental Barcelona

Catalonia meets Asian zen

What it is

A stylistic mix of modern Spanish design, Asian tranquility and world-class service.

What it isn't

It’s not a party scene despite being in the thick of Barcelona’s glam-est street; it’s a high-end, stylish retreat.

What we think

From high-end bustle of Passeig de Gràcia, guests walk up a sloping, carpeted bridge before they enter the Mandarin’s vaulted lobby. White abstract latticework lets the sunshine stream in, settling warmly on the off-white couches and earthy floor. The chain is known for being hosting the upper echelon of business travelers, but Spanish-born designer Patricia Urquiola has produced a space that is huge, airy and modern with not a whiff of the standard commercial airs… even in spite the hotel formerly being a bank.

The hotel has 120 rooms and suites; all are decorated to continue the clean and sophisticated theme. Mediterranean hues are paired with Asian accents which bring a solid level of sophistication. Low, understated couches rest against design-y Asian screens; hand-woven wool carpets are paired with light wood floors; ceramic vases rest atop dark lacquered Chinese trunks.

Downstairs in the Mimosa Garden is a beautifully landscaped garden is a welcome and tranquil oasis in the center of Barcelona’s gilded streets. The hotel has multiple restaurants, Moments being the gem in the collection. Moments serves modern Catalonian dishes under the direction of Michelin-starred Carme Ruscadella.

Up on the rooftop, a slim, rectangular pool hugs the side of the deck next to a lounge area dotted with discreet servers. Across the street, a cupola crowned by a boy sitting on Phoenix - Unión y el Fénix Español’s old company symbol - embellishes an already breathtaking skyline.

You're here because

You want the top-tier service and style of the Mandarin, but in Barcelona: a celebration of modern cuisine, design and fashion that’s not for the more traditional amongst us.

The Moment

Soft light filters through the muted glass ceiling of Blanc Restaurant. White lattice work hangs like a fringe around the main dining area, evoking memories of cutting paper snowflakes as a child. The intricate shadows fall across the blond wood tables. Leaning back in the scalloped chair, you can enjoy tasty local dishes and watch as you server tops off your glass of afternoon rosé.

Restaurants & Bars

Blanc Restaurant- Open from 7am, Blanc's menu focuses on local cuisine based on natural ingredients cooked with respect and inspiration.

Moments - Catalan cuisine. Fine dinning with 2 Michelin stars.

Terrat - Perfect for light bites and cocktails with a view. Open in Summer Season.

Bankers Bar - Beautiful cocktail lounge with experienced bartenders who make exquisite drinks.

Location

The hotel could not be more in the middle of things: it’s near Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter and Gaudi's famed Casa Batlló. The more than 300-year-old La Boqueria Market is an eight-minute stroll away, and Sagrada Familia Church is also nearby.
